This course was first developed in 2014 by the laboratory company Kystlab AS, which was our company name back then. The scaling and development of our company have included both mergers and shareholder changes, and our name is now Nemko Norlab AS – a part of renowned Nemko Group. We are still the largest, Norwegian owned laboratory company, and “Clean water offshore” is still based on our company´s year-long experience with water laboratory analysis, including potable water offshore. In Nemko Norlab the scientific know-how is further strengthened, and the service portfolio to the offshore segment expanded significantly. All together we now conduct over 100.000 routine analyses annually related to drinking water.

New in the 5th Edition

- As with the Covid-19 virus, the focus on the lethal shower microbe Legionella is increasing offshore due to the risk of disease outbreak. The training course has therefore been further strengthened to prevent Legionella disease.

- The course is also updated according to new recommendations for the annual sampling program, changes that potentially will lower analysis costs.

- This edition has also been updated in accordance with current regulations, including an important change in authority responsibility. The Institute of Public Health is no longer responsible for anything offshore.

General course info

 - The course is well illustrated to provide the best possible understanding and interpretation of the comprehensive regulations.

- There are intuitive and useful exercises throughout the course. The course is available in both Norwegian and English.

- Based on «Safe, Sufficient and Good Potable Water Offshore», the course highlights situations the participant typically may encounter in everyday work.

Modern ships' propulsion technology aims to increase efficiency and environmentally friendly exhaust gas emissions. To achieve these goals, standardisation of specific parameters is needed, to identify adequate fuel quality for each propulsion system.

Marine fuel oil specifications are useful for on-board engineers, to adjust and supervise the treatment process, avoiding breakdowns and failures in the ship's machinery.

How will the course benefit my company?

The course offers knowledge about standardised specifications, provided for both, distillate and residual fuel oil, used in the maritime industry. Being familiar with each parameter will help to prevent and detect mechanical problems, in respect of regulations among different scenarios of ship operations and related to different ship propulsion system configurations.

Physical and chemical properties are important to provide the best treatment process, depending on different uses and storage conditions, e.g. during winter or summer, but not all the issues are covered by fuel standards.

What standards are referenced in the course?

• Based on parts of ISO8217:2017, in order to properly and entirely outline the marine fuel standard field, the course refers to other standards such as ISO8216 Part 99 and 1, ISO/PAS23263:2019.

• Solas Chapter II/2 and Marpol Annex VI put safety and anti-pollution mandatory requirements into force, together with improved and detailed by MSC102/6/2 and MEPC.320(74) resolutions.

• Non-profit associations divulge useful guidelines, like CIMAC 01-2015, 03-2017 and 01-2019, to provide user with practical advice to prevent operational failures and safety issues.

The Hand Tools Safety course shows the learner how to safely select, use, maintain and store hand and power tools on board ships. This course identifies the correct PPE to be worn when using tools and the potential consequences of incorrect use of hand tools on board.

If a crew member does not have the proper tools for the job and the knowledge of how to use them, the person doing the work may injure themself. On ships, hand tools should be used, maintained and stored properly. A good seafarer takes care of the ship's tools.

For this purpose, this course details how personnel on board ships should adequately use hand and powered tools to ensure not to put their own safety at risk or damage the vessel and its machinery. More in detail, this Hand Tools Safety course will cover: hand tools and needed Personnel Safety Equipment (PPE) for using them, correct use and maintenance of hand tools and the dangers presented by power supplies.
