Assessment Details

Course assessment with an 80% pass mark and two attempts.

 

 

By participating in this course, attendees will gain valuable knowledge on various SOLAS chapters, their relationship with the STCW Convention, IMO Model Courses, and ISM Code, ultimately enhancing their understanding of maritime safety. Throughout this in-depth course, participants will explore the intricacies of SOLAS, from ship construction and fire protection to cargo operations and maritime security. The curriculum is designed to cover the essential elements of each SOLAS chapter, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high safety standards in the shipping industry. In addition, the course highlights the significance of continuous training, staying updated with SOLAS amendments, and understanding the mandatory certificates and documents required on ships. Attendees will leave the course with a solid foundation in SOLAS, equipping them to excel in the maritime sector. It is important to stress that you always orient yourself towards your ship's specifications and follow your shipping company-approved procedures. You will be presented with an assessment at the end of this course.

Course goal: This course provides learners with an awareness of the COSHH regulations, and how they control work with hazardous substances.

Learning Objectives

LO1 Explain the COSHH regulations and their applicability to the Oil and Gas Industry

LO2 Explain the legal obligations under COSHH for both employees and employers, and explain the REACH regulations

LO3 Explain the health effects of working with hazardous substances, and the various ways that these can enter the body

LO4 Explain the use of Safety Data Sheets, Labels and Assessments within the COSHH regulations

LO5 Explain the common labelling system and identify the standard symbols

LO6 Explain the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment

LO7 Explain requirements for storage, handling and disposal of hazardous substances

LO8  Define the control measures for handling hazardous substances and explain the control hierarchy

LO9 Explain the process for dealing with hazardous substances in the event of a spill

LO10 Define the recording and reporting process within the COSHH Regulations

The object of this course is to ensure that course participants maintain and update their knowledge of basic safety and emergency response.

 

After completing the course the students should have refreshed and upgraded their knowledge and proficiency in:

- The use of handheld fire extinguishers

- Lifesaving first aid

- Using an escape chute

- Correct use of a rescue suit with breathing apparatus

- Helicopter evacuation (HUET) (see comment under miscellaneous)

 

This course is valid for 48 months.

Students will learn terms like ""True North"" and ""Magnetic North"" and differentiate between the two. The students will also learn how to read and understand the compass rose on the nautical charts and implement readings from the compass to adjust their course and bearing. In this course, there will also be detailed information about different types of compasses and instructions on how to install them on the sailboat properly.

The course is not a replacement for official IMO regulations, guidance notes, or any documents forming part of a vessel’s safety management system. Blackouts, propulsion limitations, total loss of propulsion, and loss of steering capability are all serious incidents. While such events in non-congested waters may increase risks to the vessel and personnel, they rarely lead to life-threatening outcomes. However, these risks become critical and may result in major casualties during manoeuvres in restricted areas, such as traffic lanes, port entries or exits, or close coastal navigation in heavy weather. The course covers the essential aspects of ship propulsion, including the causes and consequences of propulsion loss, illustrated by real-life cases such as the Baltimore Bridge collapse. It offers recommendations for preventive and corrective actions, focusing on areas requiring specific attention to ensure the safety and efficiency of maritime operations. It is important to stress that you always orient yourself towards your engine room's specifications and follow your shipping company-approved procedures. The course concludes with an assessment to ensure a thorough understanding and readiness to apply this knowledge in real-world situations.
