According to the training provision in the IMDG section 1.3, a training for shore-side personnel shall be trained in General Awareness training. For seafarers, the STCW Code links to the same provision in the IMDG Code. The purpose of the training is to give the participant a good awareness of the structure and content of the IMDG code. The participant shall get a good awareness over the classification, marking and labeling of packages, marking and placarding of CTUs, documentation, stowage and segregation provisions, and consigning provisions depending on the type of sea vessel. To get a better understanding of the IMDG code it is preferred that the participant has an electronic or a paper copy of the IMDG code. The course is divided into 16 lessons and one final assessment which mainly follows the structure of the IMO Model Course 1:10 and the IMDG code including also information regarding the Memorandum of Understanding Baltic Sea and a comparison with the road and rail regulations ADR and RID. The student will get knowledge over classification av dangerous goods, packaging, and tank provision, marking and labeling of packages, IBCs, and Cargo Transport Units and DG documents. The student will also be familiar with segregation, handling, and stowage provision for different types of ships and different parts of the IMDG Supplement e.g. EmS and MFAG.
