Climate change is a natural process. However, due to the burning of fossil fuels at an unprecedented rate, humans have caused accelerated climate change. This is evident from the fact that the Earth is now warmer by nearly 2C as compared to pre-industrial times. Also, by looking at the C02 levels, we can see that emissions were in the range of 280 ppm in the 18th century as compared to 440 ppm today. So why is climate change important for ESG investing? Climate change causes billions of dollars in losses each year. Ever heard of billion-dollar storms? Billion-dollar storms are extreme weather events that cause at least 1 Bn dollars in damage. Hurricane Harvey that hit Houston in 2017 caused damages amounting to USD 125 Bn. Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico caused 90 Mn in damages.
