This course is for officers, other than masters, who require an insight into German shipping law and shipping regulations.

Is previous experience required?

An existing certificate of competence issued by a whitelisted state is recommended to complete the course and required to receive a certificate of equivalent competency issued by the German authorities.

This course does not refer to specific legislation or standards but is written according to industry best practice.

Is there an assessment?

Once you have completed the course, you will be asked a series of questions to check your knowledge and understanding. These are based on the learning objectives for the course and have a pass mark of 80%.

It is important to develop cultural understanding to improve communication across cultures during work and off-work time aboard. Further, understanding cultural differences & similarities as well as reaching a cultural self-awareness level to help the crew avoid and manage conflicts caused by multi-culturalism.

This course explains the importance of understanding the meaning of culture and defines stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination. Moreover, it provides the general guidelines and techniques for analysing, as to become more aware of your own and other cultures.

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, OPITO has altered the required processes to gain accreditation. You no longer have to attend an invigilation centre to complete this course, but must prove identity where required.
