The ""Safety of Ship Engineers and Crew in the Engine Room (Machinery Space)"" course is an essential educational training program designed for marine engineers and engine room department personnel on commercial ships. The program aims to raise awareness of potential hazards in the engine room, equip participants with essential safety knowledge, and promote a culture of preventative measures to minimise the risk of accidents and injuries. By completing this comprehensive course, participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the importance of safety in the engine room, learn about various safety equipment and procedures, and explore best practices through real-life case studies. It is important to stress that you always orient yourself towards your engine room's specifications and follow your shipping company-approved procedures. You will be presented with an assessment at the end of this course.

This course is to help provide understanding of risk assessments and why they are needed. This course is ideal for promoting the need for risk assessments in the workplace with simple and clear training. This course will show the viewer how risk assessments don’t need to be daunting and time-consuming tasks. An emphasis is placed on why risk assessments are needed in the workplace

Students will learn the techniques to be used at any time in order to find their exact position. Depending on which instruments they have available on board, there are varying ways that they can follow to accomplish this.

An Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS), often referred to as scrubbers, is a device installed onboard marine vessels that literally “scrubs” harmful sulphur oxides from exhaust gases. The technology is commonly installed on ships seeking compliance options in the face of tighter emissions regulations. Scrubbers have been adopted for compliance within Emission Control Areas near coastlines. They are also being installed to comply with the International Maritime Organization’s global sulphur cap from 1st January 2020.

 

During this course, you will be introduced to Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS), or scrubbers, with an insight into how they work, the types of scrubbers and the pros and cons of installation. You will explore the associated legislation, the factors influencing the choice of scrubbers, and the various technologies. You will also gain an understanding of certification and the associated monitoring requirements.

Once you have completed each section of the course, you will be asked a series of questions to check your knowledge and understanding. These are based on the learning objectives for the section and have a pass mark of 80%.
